Exploring Old Downtown Newhall Ca., who knew that starting our Funday Monday we would find so much history while having breakfast at our longtime favorite, the Way Station Coffee Shop.
Established as the Travelers Hotel and Kafe in 1925 at the corner of 9th St and Spruce (later San Fernando Rd. and now Main St.) the 2nd floor was added in 1928 and created quite the reputation for its… shall we say… “Ladies of the Evening.”
The Travelers Hotel and Kafe operated until 1949 when its new owners, in hopes of changing its reputation, changed it to the Soledad Hotel and Coffee Shop. Razed in 1964 and rebuilt as a one-story, the corner location operated as Curry’s Ice Cream Parlor until the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. Two weeks later it opened as the Way Station Coffee Shop celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
With license plates and brand-name metal signs adorning every inch of the walls, the Way Station is renowned for its traditional menu and extra-large portions. A favorite breakfast spot of both sets of our parents, there are so many memories watching the cook with his piles of onions and hash browns mounded high in the corners of the grill. And the flavors… the same exact unique tastes I remember as a child and then later with Colleen when we brought our kids. So many fun memories. Happy Funday Monday to all. Stay safe.
